Renewal Timelines by Age

• Under 1 year — some countries recommend renewal every 1-2 years
• 1 to 5 years — passport photos should be updated every 2-3 years
• 6 to 15 years — standard 5-year passport validity applies in most countries
• 16 and older — adult rules apply with 10-year validity

Age-Specific Requirements

Newborns (0-6 months)

Photos of newborns are the most challenging. The baby must have their eyes open and be facing the camera directly. Many countries accept photos where the baby is lying on a white surface.

Toddlers (6 months - 3 years)

Toddlers must have a neutral expression with their mouth closed. No toys, pacifiers, or hands should be visible. A parent may support the child from behind as long as their hands are not visible.

School-Age Children (4-15 years)

The same rules as adult photos apply, with some leniency for younger children regarding facial expressions. Children should sit or stand on their own for the photo.
